Minimally invasive treatment for Kidney Stones
PCNL stands for Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. It is minimally invasive treatment for the removal of kidney stones.
What are kidney stones:
Kidney stones are formed due to crystallization of chemical compounds in the urine. They can be removed using different treatments – PCNL, Lithotripsy and ureteroscopy. When stones that are in the kidney or upper ureter are too large to be removed by other forms of treatment, we use the PCNL treatment.
Who can get a PCNL treatment:
Any patient with kidney stones 1cm or larger is recommended the PCNL treatment.
Procedure:
- This involves making a small hole in the kidney after giving general anesthesia to a patient.
- Through this small hole we pass the nephroscope and find stones in the kidney.
- The stones are broken into small pieces and removed.
- After this surgery patient is admitted for one day in the hospital and discharged home after recovery.
