What is a Urinary Tract Infection?
This is a common problem in the community. Women, especially as they get older, and old men have a higher risk of developing Urinary Tract infections. The common symptoms of UTI are
- Frequency – passing urine too often
- Urgency – needing to pass urine immediately
- Burning pain – observed in private parts while passing urine
- Fever – Low-grade fever
How to treat UTIs?
Usually, patients are managed by giving a course of antibiotics. However patients having recurrent infections need to be evaluated by a urologist.
Anyone having 3 or more infections in a year is said to have recurrent Urinary Tract infections. These patients will require a urine culture, ultrasound of the Urinary system and an endoscopic assessment of the Lower Urinary Tract. Most patients who are normal on the above tests usually get better with a course of prophylactic antibiotics over a period of six months
